Dr. Kumar is a licensed clinical psychologist. He is a founder of Therapeutic Residential Services, a private agency providing services to clients in the Bay Area. He also co-founded another mental health agency (The Hume Center) in June 1993. He served as President of the Hume Center until August 31, 2004.

He has 23 years of experience in the mental health field, serving the underserved communities with dedication. He volunteered for five years in this country full - time to learn how to serve without expectations. He began his professional career in 1983 as a social scientist (psychologist) with the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Collaborative Center for Mental Health and Research, Department of Psychiatry, PGIMER, Chandigarh, India. Later, he completed his doctorate in Clinical Neuropsychology from the Department of Neurosurgery, PGIMER, Chandigarh, India. He finished his post-doctoral training from St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center, San Francisco. He has provided mental health services to varied clientele populations along with clinical supervision and teaching postgraduate students of clinical psychology in the Bay Area for the last fourteen years.

Dr. Kumar is very active in the interfaith activities and member of the Executive Committee of Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Monument Community Partnership (MCP), Concord (2003-2005). He has also started Annual Interfaith Spring Festival in down town Concord, California for the last two years to build bridges in the different faith communities in the Bay Area to live happily and peacefully.

His favorite quotes are “If there is one God, there is one Man” and “ The Father is good, is wise; the Son is good, is wise; the Holy Spirit is is good, is wise wise. Yet not three goods and wises but one good and wise”. He believes that to bring about ecumenism and to promote cooperation and better understanding among different religious denominations, we should establish United Religions Organization (URO) immediately. His heart goes out to the weaker sections of the society. He believes that the physically & mentally challenged persons’ rights mean their right to be human. They need to be empowered and not end up being merely objects of pity. His experience is that some women who are victims of domestic violence do come and stay in the shelters but before soon go back to the home where such incidents of domestic violence occurred. Being an expert in psychology, he suggests that the factor of unconscious motivation needs be explored in cases like this. He talks about the love-hate relationship a la Freud who had observed: “You love most what you hate most.” He feels that it is a vicious circle and only qualified persons with lot of practical experience in the field would know who could advise how to break this vicious circle. It is the good fortune of NRI that a specialist like Dr, Kumar is associated with this trust and his dedication to the cause would before soon make him a role model for those working for a similar cause.
